...should allow its visitor or user to perform a task as quickly, simply and efficiently as possible. Ideally, the visitor or user should find their encounter with the site or application a pleasurable experience. They should have confidence in the tool they are using and/or the organisation with which they are dealing. This user experience can be enhanced by good visual design. Even the smartest application that meets all a user's requirements can be abandoned if it appears cumbersome and overwhelming.
